Adventure Time: The Flip Side Issue 1 is the first issue of the 2014 mini-series. It is written by the Eisner Award-winning Bandette team of Paul Tobin and Colleen Coover and artwork is done by Wook Jin Clark, the author of Megagogo.
Finn and Jake find themselves without a quest and a little too much free time — what better place to look for a new adventure than the “Adventurer’s Posting Board”?! Only the adventure they grab might be more complicated than they first imagined…this might be the most complicated.
Finn is sick and Dr. Musclebump discovers that Finn is "quest deficit" and decides he needs to go on a quest immediately. Finn, Jake and BMO proceed to help a giant tie his shoe, get a centaur cupcake out of a tree and help some Pancake Princesses take a nap. Still craving excitement, the three go wait in line at the Questing Board to receive quests, but by the time they get to the front all the good quests have been taken. However, Finn notices a request on the back of the board saying that Painting Princess needs to be rescued from the Monkey Wizard. As they prepare for the quest, Princess Bubblegum comes by the Tree Fort to ask if they took the request from the back of the board. Fearful that she'll stop them from completing the quest they say no and she leaves frustrated.
As they go off on their Adventure they meet two shifty con men who make them run an obstacle course to earn their "adventure licenses." The con men try to ask if they licensed to have licenses, but Jake points out that they're not licensed to ask. As they approach the Princess Painting's castle Loofah Ogres come and challenge them to eat a large amount of ice cream if they want to pass, which they promptly do, leaving the ogres speechless.
As they enter the castle, they meet the Painting King and ask for details for the rescue mission, only to learn that the Painting Princess is still in the castle. She explains that since they got the quest from the back of the board, they must do the request in reverse and help her get kidnapped by Monkey Wizard and if they don't, all of Ooo is doomed.
