Bananas are simply a type of fruit. They notably appear in the episodes "Return to the Nightosphere," and "Daddy's Little Monster," where they seem to be some sort of excrement from the Demons' ears. They are more realistic than the Banana Guard and the Banana Man, who are also bananas.

The bananas are also used as a "weird punishment." Marceline, under the control of an evil amulet, gives the Weird Punishment Demon a curse that makes him constantly vomit bananas.

Sometimes a character will say "banaynays" in place of "bananas". Two instances of this are known, both by Jake. He first says it in "Memory of a Memory," where he finds the memory crack to The Core and says "It's banaynays down here!" The other instance was used in a video Jake recorded with his video phone prior to the events of "Return to the Nightosphere." It was heard in "Daddy's Little Monster" when Jake said "So, this is the Nightosphere, it looks banaynays."
