ā€”Ice Queen to Fionna

The Ice Queen is the gender-swapped version of the Ice King, created by the original series designer, Natasha Allegri. She has winter/ice-related powers like Ice King, which originates from her tiara. She makes her first appearance in the episode "Fionna and Cake," in which it is revealed that she, like all the other gender-swapped characters, existed as in the fanfiction written by the Ice King.

However, in the sequel series Fionna & Cake, it is revealed that she does exist in an alternate reality as a non-magical, human ice cream vendor, known as the Ice Cream Queen (as credited in "Casper & Nova"). She, along with Fionna, Cake and many gender-swapped versions exist in a secret alternate reality created by Prismo who hid the world in the mind of Ice King. However, when Ice King was reverted back into Simon Petrikov, his non-magical human-form, the Fionna and Cake universe lost magic as well and everybody who resided there became non-magic versions of themselves.

Her ice cream cart is where a portal caused by Simon's ritual in the second episode opens, leading Cake to enter it, much to the dismay of Fionna who later enters the cart looking for her pet with the portal closed, angering Ice Queen. After pulling Fionna out of her cart, Fionna retaliated by kicking her in the stomach, but quickly apologized afterward.

Ice Cream Queen reappears later in "Casper & Nova" about to serve ice cream to some kids. Not knowing that a portal has manifested in her cart again, she inadvertently pulled out one of the Scarab's beetle forms.

Appearance[]

The Ice Queen has light blue skin, long white hair, and long lightning-shaped eyebrows. Like her male counterpart, she also has white eyes but with deep blue eyeshadow. Her hair, while also long like the Ice King's beard, is wavy with curls instead of shaggy. She wears a small golden tiara with red gems and a neckband bejeweled with a single sapphire blue gem in the center. She also wears a blue long-sleeved ball gown with blue buttons, and light and dark blue shoes. Her voice is high-pitched and raspy like that of a witch. She also appears to be quite tall as Fionna only reaches up to her chest.

Her human form in Adventure Time: Fionna & Cake depicts her as having olive skin and dark hair similar to that of Simon Petrikov. Her eyebrows retain their jagged shape, but are much shorter. She also wears a white uniform consisting of a collared shirt and matching pants as well as a red bow tie and a small white crown.

Personality[]

Interestingly, despite alternate version of the Ice King, the Ice Queen is far more cruel, evil, and aggressive than he is. She uses much more violent and complex means to get her way than the Ice King does, such as tormenting Fionna with a wild scheme in order to put her out of commission, and leaving her free to obtain Prince Gumball, while the Ice King would usually break in through a window with a cheesy phrase. She is more serious than the Ice King, but like her counterpart, she inevitably fails. In the Fionna and Cake comics, she is revealed to be a quite tragic character as her schemes are all aimed at fixing her condition caused by her Tiara. That being said, the episode, "Five Short Tables", shows she does have a comical side similar to Ice King, as she also writes fanfic and almost wanted Cake to make her a flapjack portrait.

As a human, she appears to be more mild-mannered and enjoys her profession serving ice cream. Like everyone else in her world whose memories of their past lives were erased, she has completely forgotten about her feud with Fionna. Though she showed indignation at seeing Fionna climb into her cart.

Origin[]

The following information is from the Adventure Time comic book series. It may not be part of the same canon or continuity as the animated series.

Natasha Allegri has confirmed that the Ice Queen has a different origin than the Ice King. This backstory was eventually revealed in the Fionna and Cake comics. It is revealed that the Ice Queen initially was a water nymph that made friends with a cat (implied to be Cake) by saving it. The nymph is eventually fatally injured and the cat helps her with a magic gem. While not explicitly stated, the gem seems to have side effects similar to the Ice King's crown and in fact, is implied to be part of Ice Queen's Tiara. The Ice Queen eventually manages to undo the effect of the gem by consuming a lot of heat and melting. It is unclear if she survived this. As she melts she warns Fionna to be careful when using magic artifacts. Due to the Ice Queen and Cake having a shared past, Fionna is probably adopted and raised in a different way. It should be noted that the Fionna and Cake comic canon is told by Gunter, so it is unknown whether this origin applies to the show's canon.

Comics[]

The following information is from the Adventure Time comic book series. It may not be part of the same canon or continuity as the animated series.

In Issue 16, it is revealed that Ice King created a real life, giant Ice Queen to put in his dungeon, which he abandoned 200 years ago. When they meet again, Ice Queen rebuffs him and attempts to kill Finn and Jake. However, Ice King flies through her chest, causing her to shatter to pieces. This also frees an old rock candy lady Ice King used to power her "secondary regality processor."

Trivia[]

  • Just as the Ice King's source of power is his crown, Ice Queen's is her tiara, which even Cake uses for an ice attack at one point.
  • The Ice Queen's eyebrows are the equivalent of the Ice King's beard, allowing flight.[2]
  • The Ice Queen refers to Fionna as a "tomboy."
  • In Natasha's drawing, Ice Queen was the previous owner of Cake, who cared for her as a kitten.
  • The Ice Queen's final design differ from that of her initial designs, and this is because Natasha wanted her dress to resemble the dresses worn by Anastasia and Drizella, Cinderella's ugly stepsisters from the Disney film Cinderella.
  • Fionna warns Cake about Ice Queen's tiara, saying that Cake "might catch her crazy." This infers that it would make her evil. It also mirrors Ice King's origin story in "Holly Jolly Secrets Part II."
    • It is possible that Ice Queen's more evil personality and cunning is based on what Ice King believes himself to be like. It is also possible that he made her like this to make him sound more tough, as it is he who wrote the story.
  • According to Natasha, the Ice Queen's backstory is completely different from that of the Ice King, meaning she acquired her tiara in a different way, to that of the king's crown.
  • While the Ice King is always barefoot, the Ice Queen wears shoes.
  • At the end of the credits for Adventure Time: Hey Ice King! Why'd you steal our garbage?!!, the screen that shows Finn and the Ice King facing at each other fades into a screen of Fionna and the Ice Queen facing each other in the same position.
  • Unlike other wearers of the Magic Crown, she bears no visible nose. This could be due to her tiara having different properties. However, in the original storyboard for "Fionna and Cake," Ice Queen appears with a long nose resembling Ice King's.
  • In The Adventure Time EncyclopƦdia, Ice King's "trading cards" for the Fionna and Cake characters profess a deep love for Ice Queen, though this is not necessarily canon to the series.
  • It is unknown whether or not her past within the show's canon line up with those told the comics, in which she is a Water Nymph turned Ice Wizard, or if her past mirrors that of Simon, a human who was corrupted by the magic tiara. Consequently, it is unknown if she has any sort of meaningful relationship with Marshall Lee, the way Simon does with Marceline.

Appearances in other media[]

  • Ice Queen appears in Adventure Time Battle Party as an alternate outfit for Ice King.
  • Ourworld.com features an outfit in her likeness.
  • There was a "Pet Society" costume of her until the game shut down on June 18, 2013.
