I didn't want to put this in the Voting Forums yet, because this is just an idea. We're all tired of Wikia's constant crashing. I know I am, at least. Until Wikia gets their act together, I say we should set up an IRC chatroom. It's free to create, as you can just type in a channel name in the thinstack client and it creates the channel for you. I like thinstack because I'm used to it, and several channels that I use frequently are hosted using thinstack. There is also a channel list, so you can see if there are any other channels that you are interested in joining. thinstack is supported on mobile devices as well (at least I can access it using Google Chrome on my phone) and doesn't require an IRC client; it can be run out of your browser. (I have NOT tested thinstack on Firefox or Internet Explorer, as I don't use either. Feel free to, though. If it doesn't work, then you should probably upgrade to Chrome.)

EDIT: It works in Internet Explorer and Chrome. I'd appreciate it if someone tested in Firefox to confirm that it works in it. It also works in Chrome Canary, the "in development" version of Google Chrome.

Pros[]

  • Not as prone to crashing
  • Commands
  • Mods would still have the ability to kick and ban users (I think so, at least. I can't remember for sure)
  • Free
  • An "Away" command
  • Not as prone to spam[1]
  • Anyone who wishes to use the Wikia chat can still use it
  • Both chats can be open at once

Cons[]

  • Not customizable
  • Bland-looking
  • Times New Roman

[1]: Users wouldn't be able to find the IRC chat as easily, unless they knew we had one and were looking for one.

FAQ[]

Q: But then this Wikia's chat will die!
A: It's glitchy and crashes anyways. Besides, I've heard rumors that Wikia is going to shut down/completely revamp chat.

Q: What about the rules?
A: Someone (the mods) can make a pastebin featuring all the chat rules, and put it in the IRC's topic. Mods can switch the links as needed and change the rules if necessary. To change the topic, IRC ops can do /topic <what you want it to say>.

Q: What about pings?
A: IRC has built in pings, if I'm not mistaken. You just need to type a user's full name.

Q: How will we know who's who?
A: Users of the IRC chat will be required to use a name that they are known by or their full username. If they don't, there will be consequences.

Have any questions I should add? Post them below. Support it? Oppose it? Don't care? Post it below! dave strider // knight of time 19:00, January 4, 2015 (UTC)

Commands[]

Commands work in uppercase or lowercase.

Users[]

  • /privmsg <username> <message> Private messages a user.
  • /notice Unknown
  • /nick <name> Changes your display name.
  • /join <#channelname> Joins that channel.
  • /part Closes the channel.
  • /cycle Cycles through all of your open channels.
  • /knock <channel> <reason> Knocks on invite-only channels, asking to join.
  • /mode <name> <letter> Changes a user's mode. (see: Modes)
  • /devoice <name> Removes a user's "voiced" status. Being voiced just gives someone a nice little + sign to the left of their name. I still say we reserve it for mods, rollbacks, etc.
  • /kick <name> Unknown (Must be a channel half-operator to use. Being voiced is not a channel half-operator.)
  • /invite Lists users invited to the channel.
  • /uninvite <user> <channel> Uninvites a user to a channel. This doesn't appear to do anything as of yet.

  • /topic <what you want it to say> Changes the topic/header.
  • /op <name> Makes a user an IRCop/operator.

  • Snail S2E5-tr Comment —As far as I can tell, it works on Firefox. I have not tried joining a room or anything though. SpongebobbSpongebobbSame as it ever was.SpongebobbSpongebobb 19:52, January 4, 2015 (UTC)
  • Snail S2E5-tr Comment — Is this really necessary? Anyone can create any chatroom with Tinychat or Skype or what have you. How about you simply maintaing a "Chat crash thread" that notifies anybody of any crashes, so they can simply press F5 (refresh for most people) and get back in?

  • Snail S2E5-tr Comment — Yes, but not everyone has a Skype, and Tinychat isnt really the same. It's really something to have on the side. Also, a chat crash thread seems pointless, as not everyone will check/use it. My opinions. You also can't really punish anyone for not following rules, and since you can't, people won't follow the rules. If there's no consequence, why follow the rules? IRC is pretty much the same as a Wikia chat except with a different UI and commands.dave strider // knight of time 02:45, January 5, 2015 (UTC)
    • Snail S2E5-tr Comment — I still don't think the crashes are a big enough of a problem to warrant this. You can get in again by simply refreshing the page. It'll only kick the dead horse you call "chat." It just seems to complicate stuff further. But, if you're gonna put in the work anyway, then I don't see why not...
