The great mushroom war was something first established in video makers and when I had first heard of it I had thought of mushrooms fighting, but since the episode ‘Finn the Human’ I have realized that it was a nuclear war and there has been more evidence throughout the fifth season to further expand on this.
In the episode, ‘Finn the Human’ it shows when Simon was looking into the sky a fleet of Boeing B-29 Superfortress planes. See below.
A B-29 Superfortress is a US-developed heavy bomber that is infamously known for destroying Hiroshima and Nagasaki in WWII and in the episode ‘Simon and Marcy’, the dried river Simon and Marceline walk through shortly before coming across the "Clambulance" greatly resembles the Los Angeles River which could be inferred that they are currently in America. This would mean that the American government would have dropped the mushroom bomb on America which is implied to have ended the mushroom war. However, in the same episode a photo of a mushroom cloud can be seen in the mailbox and in the back of the car that Simon puts Marceline in there appears to be a magazine with what seems to be a picture of 3 planes, flying. Before America had bombed Hiroshima and Nagasaki, they had sent out pamphlets to warn the residents that they were to drop a nuclear bomb which seems to be what the photo of the mushroom cloud and the magazine were to be for; to warn people.
This would mean that the U.S. government never meant to harm the civilians, so what were they trying to harm? America had dropped the bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki during World War Two because they were military cities, so it could be that a bomb was dropped on America for the very same reason. In ‘Simon and Marcy’, Chinese symbols can found throughout the episode which could mean that China had invaded America, however there is also a lot of English in the episode which would mean that if China had invaded America their influence wouldn’t of been great, or they hadn’t been there long enough to change too much of the culture.
Another point is that from what can be inferred from the name of the event; ‘The great mushroom war’, was that it was a nuclear war that had been fought using manly nuclear weapons. The definition of war is a state of armed conflict between different countries or different groups within a country, and conflict usually means there is retaliation. So, for the mushroom war to be called the mushroom war there would need to be retaliation between America and someone else, possibly China, with the use of nuclear weapons.
